Clearwater Newsletter 1-19-2018

Happy Friday, Clearwater families!

It's been a busy week! Before we jump into the lessons that the students received, we wanted to take a brief moment to share the grace and courtesy work we have been doing lately.  Dr. Montessori believed in educating the whole child and that includes learning how to be kind person as well as a motivated mathematician. We call these lessons "Grace and Courtesy" lessons.  We've been intentional about the following gestures:

  • Saying, "Excuse me" when you need to get by someone. We get a lot of practice with this in our miniature classroom:)
  • If someone gets hurt or you accidentally hurt someone say, "Are you ok? Do you need anything?"
  • Using an appropriate voice level during lunch time and work time so that we can hear each other and protect concentration.
  • Not interrupting someone when they are working. If someone does interrupt you say something like, "I'm trying to focus on my work. Please return to your work."
We have a number of opportunities to practice these grace and courtesy skills during the school day and we are already observing many of the students using these skills with little guidance.

Lessons we've had
  • Money work
  • Article, Adjective, Noun practice
  • Reptile Venn Diagram - comparing Mr. Swims (our aquatic turtle) and Gex (a bearded dragon from another classroom)
  • Landforms and water forms
  • Parts of a Flower
  • Introduction to Fractions
  • Common Multiples
  • Common and Proper Nouns
  • Hot Air Rises (a very fun science experiment!)
  • Animal Stories

Upcoming Events & Reminders

No School on January 29th

Please label or mark winter gear: It is very helpful when mittens, hats, and snow pants have clear labels on them. Many students have black snow pants, so it's even very helpful to have a special ribbon or marker on the outside of the snow pants, making it very easy to identify whose is whose.

Dish Soap: If anyone would be willing to bring in a big bottle of dish soap, we would be eternally grateful! Thanks for the vinegar, McNiff Family!
